Last Christmas Madeliene and I convinced my family to stop giving gifts to each other. Instead, we took the money that we would have spent on each other and donated it to Heffer International. We're doing the same thing this year, although we haven't decided on an organization yet. My family also enacted a "no obligatory gifts" policy. We buy things for each other when we see things that make sense, but not necessarily for birthdays and holidays.
